About Me

I started 53stitches in 2014 after being inspired by some amazing (I now realise) knitted dolls. I made my first little crocheted monkey doll a couple of weeks later, and then I was hooked for good. This blog is a chance to give back to the wonderful community that provided so many free patterns and tutorials when I was starting out.

Today’s pattern is an oldie but a goodie - Robin! The pictures on this guy are a little grainy and have terrible lighting, but hey, it’s important to see growth sometimes in our work haha. Robin was one of the very first designs I made because I was big in my Batman phase at the time I picked up crochet. I originally started crocheting because I saw a cute little knitted Nightwing doll and wanted to make one of my own! My googling to try and find out what it was called led me to amigurumi and it took me a while to recognise that the dolls I’d seen had been knitted, not crocheted! By that point it was too late for me 😂

At any rate, here we are some 14+ years later 🤗 I hope you’re enjoying the pattern throwbacks! (and I snuck Sailor Mini Moon onto the site as well!)

✨PATTERN✨ Truly the number 1 character of all time! Anders’ pattern has been added to the website this morning so you can all create your own little revolutionary for yourselves. Anders has been my number 1 Dragon Age character ever since he first overshared his life story and told me about his cat many years ago and still holds the title today - I know he can be a polarising character for some people haha, but I just think he’s neat.

Today’s free pattern is the chunky chicken from my recent bird pattern collection! For my recent market I added a little ribbon to the top of these and used them to decorate my Christmas tree. These birds are a super quick and easy make, so they’re great for any last minute christmas presets or if you want a lil bauble for your tree as well! It felt a bit like bird week again for me here while trying to get the kits for these guys ready, so I thought what better time to get them up on the website for all of you to enjoy with me! 🤗

It’s been a long time since I made these Sailor Scout dolls, but I still absolutely love how colourful they are! When putting the patterns up on the website I got itching to make a set again to decorate my shelves! These dolls were some of my most complicated designs when I first made them, but as I’ve added more video game characters with even fiddlier costumes I think of these as a nice medium difficulty project now.

If you’ve ever wanted to create your own Sailor Scout group, the original 5 are all up on the website now! Cheating a little bit to get me all caught up on my daily pattern release. Will we be able to stick to the one a day schedule from here on out? Doubtful, but I’ll still try! What pattern from the archives would you like to see for tomorrow?

✨ NEW KITS ✨ They’re here!! The first of the bird kits are here! I only have a few designs available at the moment while I remake some of the birds so they can be photographed all together (and while I am expecting some yarn deliveries) but if there are any designs you want to see, send me a message and I’ll let you know if I can send it out in the meantime before they’re on Etsy!

I have been absolutely loving making these bird designs and I hope you will too. They’re a great introduction to chunkier yarns, if you haven’t worked with them before, and the end result is so squishy and cute!

I’ve unfortunately been a little too slow getting them online - I’ve just missed the cutoff dates for US shipping to make it by Christmas, but for my NZ and Australian peeps there’s still time if you have any crafty people in your life that you need a gift for (or you know, yourself).

In my efforts to get these all ready for the site I’ve fallen behind on my pattern-a-day release on the website, so you can look forward to a pattern dump tomorrow where I play catch up! I hope the lead up to your holiday season is a little more organised then mine 😛

Today’s free pattern update is here! I can’t pick my favourite pilot out of the original gang so I started with Allura since she’s kind of a special case. There are a lot of fiddly felt pieces in these Voltron patterns, but I personally don’t mind fiddly pieces in craft projects so it’s not bothered me too much, hopefully that’s the case for you guys too 😂

I’m working on getting bird kits on the website within the next day or two so there’s still time for them to arrive by the holidays! Sent me thoughts and prayers for my least favourite task: photography

I’ve been playing the new Dragon Age game (I’m not very far yet!) - it’s definitely not winning fav DA game so far 😅 but hey, I’m withholding further judgement until I play a bit more. I am loving the Solas content though, he’s still a well written and fascinating character, so I’ve decided to make him (and Morrigan) my free patterns for today! The links are in my stories and you can find them on the website!

I’m having fun revisiting these designs, and seeing how my pattern writing style / photography has changed for newer designs so come along with me down memory lane and keep the suggestions coming for who should be next! (I saw a Voltron request so perhaps tomorrow...)

The mini Eeveelutions are definitely in the plans but will take me a little longer to put together because I’ll need to do the photography and editing!

I’ve got birds, bird kits (coming to the website soon) and managed to make another Appa just in time after Supanova, plus the usual suspects of Pokemon, kits, cushions, etc. This is my last in person event for the year so soon I’ll be back to adding new items to the shop and churning out some of my older patterns on the website, hope to see you there!
