About Me

I started 53stitches in 2014 after being inspired by some amazing (I now realise) knitted dolls. I made my first little crocheted monkey doll a couple of weeks later, and then I was hooked for good. This blog is a chance to give back to the wonderful community that provided so many free patterns and tutorials when I was starting out.

Happy new Dragon Age day to everyone who celebrate

Happy new Dragon Age day to everyone who celebrates! I’m heading to pick up my copy now and have managed to avoid reading too much about it so I can go in fresh, since I already know there will be plenty of varied opinions abound haha. I have no idea what faction I’ll pick, I’m sure I’ll spend half the day in character creation 😂

Finalising the mini Eeveelution designs in time to have them at Brisbane Supanova in just under 3 weeks! It’s really tricky to avoid sewing completely and still have the style and look I like, so at the moment they have a couple of sewn on pieces 😅 oh well, still pretty speedy to make! And so dang cute.

I know I won’t have the patterns up before Supanova weekend so I won’t make any false promises, but I’ll be aiming to have them up in November so you can still make them for any holiday gifts or just for yourself! 🤗

✨PATTERN RELEASE - 25% OFF✨

They’re here! “These are simple patterns so I’ll just get them out quickly before Supanova” I told myself. It turns out when you decide to do 12 designs at once, even when they’re built off the same base, it takes time - who knew? But look, I think they’re worth it and I’m so happy with the pattern doc (41 pages on final count!) and the tutorials within. To celebrate the release I’m having 25% off all of the patterns in my shop until next week! (Wednesday 23rd Oct, AEST). Link is in my bio and I’m add one to my stories 🤗

These birds are only available in the shop at the moment, but I’ll be bringing them free to the website one by one over the following weeks, and they’ll all be online by the end of the year! There are still more birds I want to do, but I’m going to jump back to the mini Eeveelutions before I look at the next batch! And, of course, I’d love to make some bird kits. Now to finish as much as I can before Dragon Age is released at the end of the month and sucks away my time 😂

I hope you’re all ready for bird overload! I’m just putting the finishing touches on the (currently) 41 page pattern document 😅 and taking glamour shots of all of these little cuties today before the pattern will be released later this week! I stopped myself at 12 bird designs, although the ideas document has plenty more. Trying to pick a favourite is like choosing a favourite child, but honestly the Kookaburra is so flippin’ cute.

I’ve ended up with about 35 birds finalising the colour changes and features, but I’m so happy with how they’ve turned out. They’re a no sew construction and whip up so quickly, and the pattern has heaps of pictures so even beginners can jump in. Perfect market stock or stocking stuffers for the holiday season 😎

The pattern will be released on Etsy first, and then I’ll be adding them to the website for free over the next few weeks! And putting out a YouTube video too! I’ve been busy preparing stock for Supanova on November 8-10th, so lots going on, you can expect to see heaps of these little birds in the Supanova stock (+kits 🎉)

What the heck, why is this little Raven so cute!! I can’t stop making little birds, so while I’m working on the pattern it keeps getting bigger 😂 I can’t help it, they’re so cute and they work up so quickly! Are there any birds you’d love to see?

I filmed a video tutorial this week so soon you’re going to have more bird content then you know what to do with 😌

✨PATTERN DROP ✨ the low sew starter trio is complete! Squirtle’s been added to the website today, the link is in my bio, and although he has the most pieces to sew on (2) he’s still so quick and cute! Plus just such a pretty and relaxing colour palette 😌

I’ve been whipping up a bunch of these guys for Brisbane Supanova in the second weekend of November, plus check out my stories for a sneak peak of the next in this series, plus some little cuties coming in a kit soon 🤩

✨NEW PATTERN ✨ the low sew Charmander pattern is up on the website now! Personally I’m really enjoying having 3 versions of Pokémon all over the place (and so is one of my cats, who particularly likes kicking Charmander 😂

Only Squirtle to go now for the original starters! I’ve gotten a little sidetracked making birds (check out my stories to see a sneak peak), but now that the momentum has started it’s easier to keep it going.

Which version is your favourite? I’m partial to the original design but I do love the squish factor in the chunky version. That said, the tiny version is the one on my desk (room for more when they’re tiny) so I guess I can’t pick 😂
